If landscapes can help us piece together stories about past people, can the stories or myths of past people tell of ancient landscapes or geological phenomena?
I love this! I thought your article was very intriguing. I have always wondered about the Strait of Gibraltar. I love geomythology and think a lot about the tales in Ovid’s Metamorphosis. I never knew there was a name for it, so thank you for educating me!
Hercules was tasked to finish the 12 Labors and one of which was the cattle of Geryon. He had to go over Mount Atlas to get to the cattle. And instead he split the mountain creating the Straight known as the Pillars of Hercules. It actually became such a known myth among the land that a statue of Hercules and his two pillars has been built and is a popular tourist destination.
So heartening to hear, thank you so much. I've been keen on writing about more such stories — they exist almost everywhere you travel. Would love to know more about the Strait of Gibraltar's mythology :)
